Daniel has nearly 40 years of experience in the oil industry. Prior to founding Black Fox Resources, LLC, in 2017, Dr. Schwartz was Manager of Strategic Business Development, New Ventures, and Innovation at Aera Energy, LLC, in Bakersfield, California.
Before joining Aera in 2014, Dan spent 36 years with Shell, beginning in 1978 as a Research Geologist in Houston, Texas. He held a wide range of positions, including: Head of Production Geology Research; Division Geological Engineer (California); the Head of Production Geology and Geophysics for Shell Expro (Scotland); Technical Director in Pecten International; Head of International Deal Structuring; Director of International Producer Finance; offshore Morocco Exploration Manager; Chief Geologist; and Chief Petroleum Engineer. Dan has extensive knowledge of California, the GOM, the North Sea, West Africa, Canada, and Texas; specializing in reservoir characterization, field development, exploration, and appraisal geology. He developed Shell’s understanding of diatomite reservoirs, initiated Aera’s unconventional exploration program, and was responsible for staff development of over 900 technical professionals in Shell’s Technical Services.
In 2016 Dan was elected Vice President of Sections for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and received the A. I. Leverson Award for his paper on Monterey Exploration. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of California, Berkeley, and his PhD in Geology from the University of Texas at Dallas.
